Global Citizen and HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht invite you for an event for World Water Day, on March 22nd from 9:30am to 12.30pm.

World Water Day 2018

This event and associated campaign will engage Dutch students and constituents, as well as international stakeholders, on the importance of clean water, sanitation, and hygiene as it relates to gender equality and ending extreme poverty by 2030. In doing so, international advocacy organization Global Citizen will highlight the role of global WASH leaders, such as the Netherlands and Australia, as well as international mechanisms including the High-level Panel on Water and the launch of the Decade of Action for Water.

This event will convene prominent voices and experts from around the world to discuss the importance of clean water & sanitation for all, which is critical to gender equality, education, health, environmental sustainability, peace, and security.

Through an interactive format, the event will also engage students to take action for the creation of a better tomorrow.

Program

  • 9.30 am: Arrival guests- welcome with coffee/tea.
  • 10:00 am: Plenary session with opening speeches from (a.o.)  Anton Franken (Board HU), Talia Fried (Global Citizen), Hilda Alberda (Simavi) and youth advocate Irene Otieno. Host: Joost de Bruin.
  • 10.45 am: Break out groups. Please register for 1 of the workshops (see below).
  • 12:00 pm: Plenary closing session. Utrecht student volunteers handover final document to Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Brett Mason.
  • 12.30 pm: End of public session.

Break-Out Groups (max. 20 participants per workshop)

  1. Simavi: Gender equality and WASH. In this workshop we’ll be discussing the action that is needed to make sure that women and girls get the water and sanitation resources they need to survive and thrive.
  2. Health Promoters + World Water Net: Why WASH is critical for development. Awareness of the importance of clean drinking water and good sanitation goes hand in hand with  (health) education. The Health Promoters in Southern Africa and World Water Net have promoted this for many years. 
  3. Green Office (HU Utrecht): Future proof education. In this workshop we’ll be exploring the possibilities for enshrining sustainability into different fields of study.
  4. Minor International Health Studies (HU Utrecht): WASH and health. We like to discover the impact of unclean water on health. Trying to find causes and solutions of polluted water and how to implement new strategies  within the context of the society.We will end the workshop with an ethical debate.
  5. Minor International Development Work (HU Utrecht): Ethical development. The role of the Netherlands and other key players in international development. Sorry, this break-out group is full, you cannot register for it anymore.
  6. The Smart Sustainable Cities Centre of Expertise (HU Utrecht): developing innovative products and services that will bring smart, sustainable and healthy cities a step closer: this workshops gives insights in the ERASMUS+ capacity building project SAUNAC. SAUNAC aims at modernizing education in Vietnam, developing a curricula on Smart Sustainable Cities and strengthen the cooperation in the triple helix. You will be invited to share your ideas about possible cooperation with us, e.g. through student exchange, joint projects etc. Sorry, this break-out group is full, you cannot register for it anymore.
  7. Kakuma refugee teachers project (HU Utrecht): innovative learning methods. The Kakuma project is initiated by a group of teachers from the HU / ICEFIL  (International centre of Excellence for Inovating Learning) to provide educational skills for teachers in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. We aim to bring across knowledge, teaching skills and empathy into the global classrooms.
